August Wilson

For those of you who haven't heard it yet, August Wilson has just announced that he has inoperable liver cancer. Life expectancy: 3-6 months.

What sad news.

A colleague sent me the announcement yesterday; sad news indeed.

It's people like Wilson that I think about when people bring out that old saying, "No one on their deathbed ever wished they'd spent more time at the office." And it's true, if "the office" represents just some job that one hates. But Wilson is clearly an example of work as a calling, and I'm glad that he's completed his ten-play cycle; that's a life well-lived.
